Dear Pastors and Leaders
Responding to the East Africa Crisis Appeal
The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) has issued an East Africa Crisis Appeal in response to food insecurity in Africa. £3.6 billion has been estimated to meet this need. The generous giving of the British people has to date raised over £7 million. Prayer is essential at this distressing time, and they also need our financial support. We are asking you and your congregation to respond urgently to a food crisis in East Africa and we need your response by Easter Sunday.
Rev Canon Eve Pitts initiated an emergency meeting on Monday 13 March 2017 that was attended by sisters and brothers, lay and clergy, from several denominations. It was highlighted that many millions of people are on the verge of starvation in Somalia, Yemen, South Sudan and North East Nigeria, and will starve to death if action is not taken. The ‘Feed the People’ initiative has been launched to attend to this need.
When love for our fellow human beings motivates God’s people, and we stand together on one accord, miraculous things happen as in Peter’s escape from prison (Acts 12:5). We are inviting every Christian and every Church in Britain to be a part of a movement for change in Africa.
As a first act we are asking each church to take a collection towards the East Africa Crisis Appeal on 16 April 2017 (Easter Sunday). Easter Sunday is a significant day. As we are celebrating the resurrection from death of Jesus Christ we wish to celebrate new life for our brothers and sisters in Africa.
